Young Man in America

Well hello there. It has been a year since we last spoke. Not much has changed. Felt compelled to post today. Perhaps it is because I have not been journalling much these days and miss writing my thoughts. The main reason I chose to blog and not journal was once again because of music. I am currently listening to and adoring the album "Young Man in America" by Anais Mitchell. Interesting enough I stumbled across the album because I was attracted to the album cover. It is a picture of half a man's face who I initially thought was Sean Penn. Later, I found out the picture is of Don Mitchell, Anais's father, taken when he was 30 years old, the same age Anais was when she recorded the album. A
nais wrote songs that speak often of the relationship between parents and their children. She stated in an interview that it was inspired by the recession and how American has become an orphan. In the same interview she spoke of her personal experience and how she is not yet a parent "I’m not a mother yet and I’m not being parented. In the old days that time in life wasn’t long but nowadays it’s stretched out. Maybe I’m longing for a place I’m not at." This was interesting to me since this stretched out time is what I am currently in. It is a place that I am content in and appreciative of but at times cannot help but feel unsettled wondering if and when I will transition into finding a partner and becoming a mother. I am secure in the knowledge that my life can continue as it is and I will be fulfilled and enjoy life. This is a good place to be and one that took me awhile to attain but I am here now and satisfied. Still I cannot shake it - that wondering - that unknown, unanswered question - will I always be single? I do not have an answer and that will just have to be okay for now. Anais please keep writing. I admire people who can express themselves in such beautiful ways.
